I have returned, everyone. I’ve been gone a long time and I have now been able to start blogging again. The first thing out of the gate is that my Monte Carlo Z34 caught fire today. lol I leased the car from Credit Connection and the past year I’ve had it and I’ve dumped more money into its repair that I should have had it paid off by now. Now, I don’t have a car, but I’m going to borrow my mother’s van for a while, while I save up a shit load of money for a down payment on a Dodge Challanger. What does everyone think? Anything else new happened? lol

happy 4th of july to all borkers. since this holiday is about freedom, and we’re all free and america invented freedom, this holiday is for everyone. I would like to celebrate this holiday on this internet by posting many patriotic pictures that celebrate america. also we saved all of you in world war 2 so you have to celebrate it now.

this is king george of england. he was an evil tyrant who wanted to steal america’s money by selling us tea and rape all the scottish women.

this is george washington. he was first a philosopher and invented freedom, but the british were all gay and banned it, so he started an army and invented america.

this is where george washington explained how freedom worked to all the rich dudes in america who hated tea. they all voted to start drinking coffee instead of tea, because they decided tea was british and, thus, gay. also they declared war on britain for crimes against manliness and liberty.

this picture is america defeating the british in the battle of london in the american revolution. america invaded england and took over the country for a while before we got bored and left.

mel gibson fought in the war. all the red coats were pussies and ran away from him and his american flag. he got mad when the british killed his family by lighting them all on fire while they were at church, so invented the american flag spear and killed the british general with it and ended the war.

so america was invented and freed from british tyranny after the war. then we spent like the next 150 years invading pussy countries like mexico and canada and taking their land. then we killed all the indians because they were stupid and still played with bows and arrows.

so then after that we stopped hitler and invented fried chicken and stuff like that. so now the world is free thanks to america and cool and stuff like that.

cool american stuff:

we claimed the moon, so that the soviets wouldn’t make it communist.

we nuked japan because, lets face it, anime is gay and somebody had to stop them.

reagan invented freedom 2.0, where rich people get to keep all their money, since they earned it by working hard and poor people are lazy. and then he singlehandedly ended the soviet union by yelling at the berlin wall.

Does anyone have an OS9 capable laptop they’d be willing to sell? I have a bunch of old games that I’d like to be able to play, and I get all nostalgic for OS9. I’m basically looking for anything in the bronze keyboard Powerbook to iBook G3 range that can run it, preferably something with a working screen and an AC adapter. Extra points for a clamshell ibook.

Obligatory iPad Discussion

So what did you guys think of the iPad? I thought it’s just a really big iPod Touch. I mean, everything that the iPad can do, the iPod can do too, just smaller. The iPad can hold hundreds of books! Well, so can the iPod Touch. You can surf the web with it! Well, the iPod can too. In fact, go to the iPad’s feature page on Apple.com and it reads just like an iPod. Really, that’s it? No video conferencing (or more importantly, no camera)? No pressure-sensitive touchscreen? (That would make the Brushes program worth something) No GPS? (That makes the compass functionality kinda worthless)

What Apple did do is polish that thing like crazy. From the way the user interacts with photos and book pages, etc is all pretty slick. But, again, do I really need that when my iPod Touch is adequate enough? And the thing can fit in my pocket where I need a bag for the iPad.

I dunno, what do you guys think? (Will I get ANY responses?!

I’m thinking of upgrading the video card in my aging G4, which is currently using the Radeon 9000, with something that supports core image and stuff in Leopard. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I should get, please let me know. I know I should just save and get a whole new computer… but if I can find a cheap replacement video card in the meantime, that would be great. I almost had a 9700 Pro for $36.00 (US), but got out bid at the last possible second. :(

Does anyone have any input on the GeForce 6200 series?

Technical questions of an iMac’s matte & glossy panel displays

I’ve been pondering of buying a 21” iMac for quite some time to replace my soon to be seven years old 700 MHz eMac. I’ve been worryingly watching at the matte vs glossy-discussions around the internet, because using Aperture 2/Lightroom 3 would be the main use the computer comes for. It seems though that there is a lot of bickering just for the sake of bickering. I got the chance to spend several days with the model at home and compare it to an early 2006 Core 2 Duo iMac with a matte display and a ATi Radeon x1600 and now I’m here to share my thoughts and more importantly, ask some technical questions related to possible reasons for my results. I’m no expert on these, so I’d like to know all the details before deciding on a purchase.

I copied the same photo I took of a city landscape after the sky had gone dark. I chose it to see how much screen glare I’d see on both displays. I tried watching the photo during a cloudy winter day with plenty of light coming through the windows. The glossy iMac was positioned so it had the display facing outward of the window. The matte display was at a 90Â° angle at the window. Unsurprisingly, the matte display did not look like a mirror, but I was noticing lack of detail compared to the newer iMac’s S-IPS -panel. Is it due to the matte display having an inferior display or does the coating itself smear the image? I also thought that because the native resolution of the matte display’s native resolution is 1680 x 1050 and that the photo, which is at 3024 x 1998 has to be shown in a compressed manner, thus loss of detail happens. On the other hand, the newer iMac’s native res is 1920 x 1080.

Okay, to speak of the devil. Yes, the screen is glossy and yes, you can see yourself in it. However, I have the brightness set very low, because I hate white backgrounds straining my eyes. When I crank up the brightness higher to a level that’s still not uncomfortable, the display becomes much more acceptable to view dark pictures. Screen glare happens with other displays as well. I do remember having to darken the room, when using my eMac, because it has a coating preventing gathering of dust, which causes some mirror-like effects.

I’d like to hear an answer from you to the two details regarding display hardware. You don’t have to comment on my personal experiences on what I think of the two screens, because I know quite many of you hate glossy displays with a passion. Yes, it’s an annoyance, but in my humble opinion not as big an annoyance as some people make it sound like. Mostly I added it to “get the big picture” of the whole experiment. I really like the new iMac and its hardware. Buying an external matte display would mean buying a mac mini, a Mac Pro or a PC, and so far all three other options seem impossible/not enjoyable enough.

I still need to find an answer does the glossy coating screw up using a color calibrator like Spyder3 Pro
